Beyond the borders of North America, Frank’s career as an explorer has spanned five continents and the world’s most demanding environments.
From the tiger-dense jungles and remote grade V whitewater of Northern Laos to cycling the 1,000-kilometer volcanic spine of Java, his journeys bridge the gap between extreme athletics and cultural journalism.
These global missions include retracing millennium-old Viking trade routes across Scandinavia, trekking the tragic history of the Sandakan Death March in Borneo, and documenting the fragile marine ecosystems of the Antarctic Peninsula.
International Expeditions: 1995 — 2009
1. 2000Phuket, Paddles and Pirates 3-Month Sea Kayak / Whitewater SE Asia
3 months; expedition leader/photographer/writer. Sea-kayaked 300 km down the west coast of Thailand; last foreigners to white water kayak the Selangor River in Malaysia before it was dammed. Marooned ourselves in a remote corner of Java after destroying our kayak in 6 meter surf.
2. 2001Chasing the Dragon 1,000 km by Bicycle Indonesia
20 days; co-expedition leader/photographer/writer. Cycled 1000 km across Java while ascending six 10,000 foot volcanoes along the way. Eventually forced to stop by Islamic fundamentalist threats in wake of WTC disaster.
Photography/writing. Was a member of the first commercial expedition to travel down the Nam Ha River in north-western Laos where we made the first outside contact with indigenous people in a remote jungle village.
4. 2002Mekong Rapids/Kong Lo Cave Expedition Kayak Cambodia/Laos
Photographer/writer covering a team of Russian white water kayakers as they attempted numerous first descents of the notorious Mekong rapids at the Cambodia/Laos border. Our team also paddled the Nam Hinboun River through 7 km-long Kong Lo cave in central Laos.
Videographer on a tiger-tracking expedition during the 2nd descent down the Nam Pha River, a remote grade III-V white water river in Northern Laos. Two first-contacts with indigenous tribes en route.
Expedition leader/videographer/writer for 26-day, 800 km canoe expedition that started on the Norwegian Coast, 200 km above the Arctic Circle. RETRACED a millennium-old Viking/Sami trade route.
7. 2004Source of the Motoco Foot Patagonia, Argentina
Photographer on assignment for Outpost Magazine. The expedition retraced the Sandakan Death March, a 250 km route through the jungle where 2500 Australian and British POW’s died in 1945.
Three men- Frank Wolf, Kevin Vallely, and Dave Norona- take on a treacherous hike through the remote Scottish Highlands in their quest to achieve an elusive goal.
